A House Like No Other
The Historic Modern is a house like no other. The front portion of a 1907 one-story craftsman bungalow was relocated from an adjacent site and paired with a respectful two-story addition that introduces modern materials such as metal siding and large glass windows. With the utmost attention to detail, the architecture and interior design embrace modernity without disrespecting the cottage’s historic roots and neighborhood character.
A Moving History
The Venice walk streets are part of the Milwood Historic Neighborhood and are truly a unique blend of 1920s bungalows and modern homes with lush gardens that face the publicly accessible pedestrian walkways. An existing single-family California cottage straddled two adjacent lots and was earmarked for preservation. In an unprecedented move, the front section of the original 1907 cottage was lifted and moved to a new permanent home at 929 Marco Place. Every detail of the facade was restored or replaced with alike and certified by an historian and the Office of Historic Resources of Los Angeles and every visible detail of this Japanese Craftsman was restored to modern day standards and code.
Future Design
The Historic Modern has been designed to perfection, but there is always room for further refinement. With a rarefied team that includes Joan Behnke & Associates, master craftsmen, and some of LA’s best subcontractors, the new homeowner can easily continue to customize the home to their specific tastes and lifestyle. From the pre-designed main suite closet to the flexible space, this home can be even more personalized.
